Abstract The Great Depression (1929–1939) can be seen as an international turning point in labour regulation the colonies of European imperial powers Sub-Sahara Africa. context essentially marked beginning end era post-slavery “market-making”, witnessing move away from forced labour, first steps towards protection employees and changes form, length, administrative penal framing individual relations. article traces main features labour-related legislation its changes, reflecting modes production, racial relations, changing role colonial administration contribution International Labour Organisation to legal developments especially British, French German colonies.
